Wikipedia: Inception of a New Knowledge Base Jimmy Wales (Wales), prior to launching Wikipedia had launched Nupedia on March 9th 2000, under the ownership of Bomis Inc, a web portal company. Nupedia was an online encyclopaedia, which was promoted as being different from all other contemporary encyclopaedias as its content could be edited by any viewer and also it did not have any size limitations for data storage. There were certainmembership criteria that had to be satisfied before a person could become a member and contribute articles at Nupedia... Growth of Wikipedia During the initial stages of its launch, Wikipedia had insufficient funds to maintain its servers, domain names and hardware. Jimmy Wales had to fund the entire project. The Future - Opportunities and Challenges Inspired by the success of Wikipedia, Wales founded two projects in 2004 -Wikia that runs Wikiasari, a Wiki-style search engine; and Wikicites, a Wiki hosting service. Wikipedia also has free-content sister projects which fulfill non-encyclopaedia roles. The largest ones are -Wiktionary, a free dictionary project; Wikibooks, a free textbook project; Wikiquote, a free encyclopaedia of quotations; Wikisource, amultilingual repository of free source texts; WikimediaCommons, a shared media repository; Wikinews, a free news source and Wikispecies, biologists who collect data about species - all of these projects are run in the same way as Wikipedia. Wikipedia and its sister projects are administered by the Wikimedia Foundation... |
